My Birthday Blues

My Birthday Blues

Here’s a little secret for you - it’s almost my birthday. How old am I? Not telling. I may or may not be experiencing my third decade aboard this planet, so you do the mathematics! I’m really not that old, but I can vouch that the older you get, the less excited about birthdays you become. When I was a little girl I would get SO excited about my next birthday - the presents, the birthday cake and candles - what’s not to get excited about? Every year I would know exactly what I wanted to receive in terms of gifts and I would eagerly await the celebrations for weeks beforehand. Birthdays also meant parties, be it in a pizza parlour with all of my friends or in the local church hall, it was a way to get together and, you’ve guessed it, receive even more presents! Nowadays, my birthday jut creeps up on me out of nowhere. It feels far too close to Christmas and so I am always strapped for cash - unfortunately my partner’s birthday is the day after mine, which means that the post-Christmas budget strains hit me even harder! This year, all I want is a pair of ortak earrings, a book that I didn’t get from my Christmas list and a new pair of jeans. I’m looking forward to receiving all of these gifts and also to going out for a yummy meal, but I can’t say I get particularly excited about it anymore. Like all things, a change has taken place, and I’m no longer the little sapling that I was, but more like a big oak tree! Life is interesting, but not non-stop fun as I once thought it would be. Happy Birthday to me!
