Art Inspiration

At this time of year, when the trees are bare and the leaves are long-gone and melted into the mushy ground, it has the strangest effect on me – I just want to run into the nearest stationers, buy a whole load of art materials and get seriously crafty. I get genuinely inspired by the way the wintry sunlight filters through the sparse branches of the trees and it instantly makes me want to either take a photograph that will really and truly capture the beauty of it in that particular moment, or failing that, sketch the image down in as much detail as possible. Unfortunately, the restrictions lie in my limited ability. In my mind’s eye I can capture exactly the way in which I want to draw or paint the image, but when I apply pencil to paper, it all comes out a bit squiffy. I considered joining an art class but prices seem to be quite high and my funds are very limited at this time of year. The ideal solution would be a short holiday somewhere very picturesque, the Lake District perhaps. Holing up in quaint little hotel complete with glowing firesides, real ale and cheddar ploughmans’ sandwiches from homemade bread with nothing to do but take in the views, read and sketch away to my heart’s content would be pure bliss. Unfortunately, pure bliss comes with a price tag and I think it might have to wait until the summertime. But by then, the branches will be in full blossom and all will be green and lush – which is beautiful of course, but doesn’t inspire me in the same way as the spindly black branches of winter. I may have to make do with wrapping up warm and trotting about in the cold with my notepad.
